August 19, 2016 --
The City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works has selected Kiewit Infrastructure Co. to build The Milwaukee Streetcar’s Phase 1 line, Lakefront Extension and Operations and Maintenance Facility. Under its contract, Kiewit will be responsible for all construction activities, including installation of the rail, the overhead contact system and streetcar stops. Kiewit was one of seven firms from around the country that submitted proposals to build the system.
Kiewit and its staff are highly experienced in building urban rail lines. The company demonstrated a thorough understanding of Milwaukee’s project and will be able to work within the budget. Kiewit is firmly committed to the DBE goal of 21% and residential preference goal of upwards of 40%.
Kiewit will be issuing requests for proposals for subcontractors in the near future and will also hire local employees. A contractor forum will be conducted in September to provide an opportunity for DBE and local firms to learn more about the streetcar project and opportunities to bid for work on the job. The project will also incorporate a job-training program.
As it plans and implements the construction process, Kiewit will be working with the city, businesses and property owners along the route as well as other stakeholders. The company has rented office space in Milwaukee.
Kiewit, one of the largest transportation contractors in North America, is an employee-owned Fortune 500 company. Urban rail projects that Kiewit has built include the I-225 light rail line in Denver and Aurora, Colo., the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension Project and the nine-mile expansion of the Dallas Area Rapid Transit light rail Orange Line.
