City, Streetcar Construction Firm Reach Out to Milwaukee Subcontractors About Bidding on Work

Project Committed to Minimum of 21% DBE and 40% Residential Jobs

Milwaukee Public Works Commissioner Ghassan Korban and the project manager for the firm building The Milwaukee Streetcar held their first outreach event Sept. 8 with Milwaukee businesses about subcontracting opportunities.

More than 60 representatives of Milwaukee subcontractors attended the event at a Department of Public Works’ field office, where they learned about the project and how to bid on work.

Mike Ethier, project manager for the city’s streetcar construction firm, Kiewit Infrastructure Co., told subcontractors they could learn about bids at www.TheMilwaukeeStreetcar.com and from notices in The Daily Reporter. The streetcar website also includes a link to sign up for bid notices and the tentative bidding schedule.

Korban said the city was committed to at least 21% of the subcontract work going to DBE firms and meeting a residential preference goal of 40%.

Ethier said that Kiewit, which will be issuing the bids, wants to engage local subcontractors as much as possible. Contracts that will be bid by mid October include pavement removal, excavation, curb and gutter, trucking, snow removal, traffic control, stops construction, concrete, traffic signals, construction of the operations and maintenance facility and water, sewer and storm utility work. Most of the work will take place starting in 2017.

Speaking about local and DBE work opportunities at the meeting were Lafayette Crump, chief operating officer of Prism Technical Management & Marketing Services, and Peter Coffaro, vice president/ business services of Employ Milwaukee.
